Thanks for that info. No, I did'nt notice the 'Overwrite' box. And the new file I started in haste 
was just a 'generic' Writer document and not from one of my templates. That means that the style 
Text Body was in its virgin state with left align.

The problem was, I guess, connected with inheritance. All the new styles I wanted to gather from 
the import of another document depended on (inherited from) Text Body.  Of course, in my imported 
file, Text Body and its other relatives had long since been modified to justified.

I never use the bog standard Text Body style so I never thought to check it the new, receiving, 
file.

I just ran another test using 'overwrite' and that solved the problem. Thanks.
